Fujisan (富士山) or Mount Fuji, is the highest mountain peak in Japan at 3,776 meters (12,389 feet). The snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji is remarkably symmetrical and has long been an important, sacred symbol to the people of Japan. It is one of the “Three Holy Mountains” and has inspired artists, poets, and pilgrims for many centuries. The first recorded ascent is believed to be in 663 by an anonymous monk, but today, over 300,000 people climb the mountain every year. A well-known Japanese proverb, “一度も登らぬ馬鹿、二度登る馬鹿” can be translated as “He who climbs Mt. Fuji is a wise man; he who climbs twice is a fool.”
