Miyajima Sunset 2024 Wooden Tree Ornament
£13.00

Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, is a small island in Japan’s Hiroshima prefecture, famous for its iconic shrine and "floating" torii gate. The shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dates back to the 12th century and is built over the water, giving the illusion of floating during high tide. The island is also known for its natural beauty, including lush forests and scenic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Similar to the city of Nara, the island also boasts a large population of shika deer which are an attraction all of their own. Itsukushima is considered a sacred place in Shinto belief, attracting visitors for its spiritual significance, stunning architecture, and peaceful atmosphere.

The design is printed on laser-cut walnut wood for a handmade-feel, and strung with a bright red ribbon trimmed in gold thread. Each ornament measures approximately 9cm tall (3.5 inches) x 5.7cm wide (2.25 inches) wide, not including the ribbon. Ornaments are printed on one side only. Each ornament is presented in a gift box with interior black foam padding for safe storage after the holidays.

This ornament is a limited edition special item for the 2024 holiday season, and will not be reprinted after the season ends.

Sumo Snow Globe “Happy Holidays” Greeting Card
£3.50

Celebrate the holidays with my Sumo Snow Globe greeting card! Instead of a typical snowy scene, the sumo wrestler (rikishi) is whipping up a blizzard of salt before stepping into the ring. Rikishi throw salt as a ritualistic and symbolic gesture before their matches, which signifies the removal of impurities and evil spirits from the sumo ring, known as the "dohyō." The salt-throwing ritual has become an iconic and visually striking part of sumo matches, adding an element of excitement to this traditional sport.

Plum Blossom and Pine "Season's Greetings" Greeting Card
£3.50

Celebrate the joys of winter with this minimal and elegant holiday card featuring plum blossom, gold sensu (扇子) fans, and pine motifs. Everyone knows that cherry blossoms steal the show in Japan in spring, but the often underrated plum blossom with its deep pink flowers are a sight to behold in the dreary mid-winter weather. Japanese pine, often stylised in this abstract manner, is a symbol of longevity and endurance and is often used in New Years’ celebrations.

Sei Shōnagon Pin Brooch
£10.00

The first pin from my riso print series, Defying Tradition: Japanese Women Who Changed the World, is author, poet, and court lady Sei Shōnagon.

Shōnagon was an Imperial court lady who served Empress Teishi during the middle Heian era. At age sixteen, she married a government official and gave birth to a son. Shōnagon’s relationship with fellow writer and court lady Murasaki Shikibu was strained. The courts of Empress Teishi and co-empress Empress Shōshi encouraged rivalry between the writers, pitting the women against each other, despite the possibility that the two had never met. Shōnagon was famously ridiculed in Murasaki’s diary where she complained, “Shōnagon was dreadfully conceited. She thought herself so clever and littered her writing with Chinese characters; but if you examined them closely, they left a great deal to be desired.”

Shōnagon’s work, The Pillow Book, was a collection of poems, anecdotes, and essays giving insight to her life as a court lady. As it was originally meant to be a private work for her enjoyment only, she was able to freely write about her thoughts and opinions that she was not allowed to state publicly. As a result, the book became extremely valuable as a historical document.

Both Shōnagon and Murasaki, as women, had an active role in Heian-era society. Japanese kana, the writing system they used in their writing, was considered “the people’s language” in comparison to the formal Chinese, and made them far more popular and influential for centuries to come.

First Snow at Jigokudani A3 Riso Art Print
£25.00

Jigokudani (地獄谷), or Hell Valley, is located in Yamanouchi, Nagano prefecture, and is world-renowned for its large population of Japanese snow monkeys. Each morning, these mischievous macaques travel down from the mountains to bathe in the steamy natural hot springs before heading back into the safety of the forests at night. Geri's travel tip: If you want a really special experience, book yourself a stay at the family-run "Korakukan" ryokan, featured in the background of this print. The monkeys take over the inn's outdoor onsen, too, and where else can you brush your teeth while watching monkeys groom each other on the rooftops?

This four-colour riso print has been inspired by traditional shin-hanga woodblock printing, and would be a perfect memory of a hike to Jigokudani to see these gorgeous and cheeky creatures.

What is a riso print?

These prints use risograph technology, a method of printing developed in Japan in the mid-1980s. It can be described as a mix between screenprinting and photocopying. The risograph process produces prints with extremely vibrant, crisp inks. Sometimes these inks overlap during the printing process to create interesting and unique details—these slight variations and colour shifts are part of the charm of riso, adding character and a handmade-feel to the art. These soy-based inks also have a lower environmental impact.

Please note: riso’s soy inks are similar to newspaper printing in that they never get fully absorbed into the paper, so take care not to handle the print or touch the ink directly to avoid any risk of smudging.

NOTE TO AMERICAN CUSTOMERS:

As of July 1 2020, international parcel shipping rates to America have increased by over 100%. This has come to a huge shock to many of us small business owners. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has been forced to increase their rates by the US government, and as a result, these increases have been passed on to Royal Mail customers here in the United Kingdom.

This price increase only affects parcel-sized packages, and this A3-size print can only be shipped to the United States in this method. The rates for letter mail and large letter have not changed, so if you cannot justify the shipping cost and would still like to order something from my store, I would recommend looking at my pins, patches, and smaller A4 sized-prints. If you don’t mind the shipping cost, please go ahead and order! I apologise for the inconvenience, and hope that you understand the changes are beyond my control.

Tanuki Golden Baubles "Merry Christmas" Greeting Card
£3.50

Japanese tanuki statues are ceramic figures that come in various sizes and designs, often placed outside shops, restaurants, and homes across Japan. While tanuki are real animals found throughout both rural and urban areas of Japan—commonly referred to as "raccoon dogs"—they hold a special place in Japanese folklore as well. These statues typically portray the tanuki with a large belly, a large hat, and a sake bottle—not too different from Santa Claus! Tanuki statues are often depicted with exaggeratedly large… “baubles,” which symbolize prosperity and good fortune. the Studio Ghibli film, Pom Poko, revolves around the lives of these animals in an ever-evolving Japan.

Shimenawa Wreath “Season's Greetings” Greeting Card
£3.50

Shimenawa (標縄) are ropes typically crafted from rice husk fibres tied with carex weed before being twisted together. The ropes are traditionally used to demarcate a space considered to be sacred or ritually pure, and are believed to be ward off evil spirits and bad fortune. For this reason, the ropes are found not only at the entrance of Shinto shrines and tied around sacred trees, but fashioned into wreaths to hang at home, especially during the New Year season. My design features a wreath decorated with festive plum blossom, with two fluffy shima enaga (シマエナガ) birds perched in the middle.

(Retired) Snow at Kaminarimon 2022 Wooden Tree Ornament
£12.50

A visit to Tokyo isn’t complete without a trip to the beautiful Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa. Leading to the famous landmark is Kaminarimon, the outermost entrance gate, which features a giant lantern and four statues. The Kaminarimon, meaning “thunder gate” in Japanese, was originally built in 941 AD but reconstructed in its current location in 1635. Over the years, the gate has burned down numerous times, with the most current version built in 1960 thanks to donations from Matsushita Electrical Company, now known as Panasonic. The chōchin lantern that hangs in the gate measures a whopping 3.9 metres tall by 3.3 metres wide and weighs 770 kilograms! My version of Kaminarimon depicts a snowy modern winter scene inspired by traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

This ornament is a limited edition special item for the 2022 holiday season, and will not be reprinted after the season ends.

Hiragana and Katakana Chart Risograph A3 Prints
from £15.00

These hiragana and katakana chart riso prints are ideal not only for those just getting started with learning Japanese, but for anyone who admires the beautiful Japanese syllabary “alphabets.”

Each A3 print features 46 of the basic ‘kana’ characters, pronunciation in ‘romaji’ underneath, and a sample vocabulary word with accompanying illustration. While most kana charts in Japan are targeted towards young children, the slightly retro-style and word choices in these prints are designed with older language learners in mind.

What is hiragana and katakana?

The Japanese reading and writing system is a mixture of three “alphabets”—hiragana, katakana, and iconic kanji characters adopted from Chinese. Hiragana and katakana are “syllabaries”—meaning each character represents a sound or syllable—the building blocks of words. For example, the word ‘kimono’ in Japanese has three syllables: ki-mo-no, and each syllable corresponds to a character on the hiragana chart.

The cursive-style hiragana characters are primarily used for native Japanese vocabulary and grammatical elements, and the more boxy, modern-looking katakana characters are primarily used for loanwords, onomatopoeia, scientific names, and so on. All three writing systems are integral for learning Japanese, and it’s recommended that beginner learners of Japanese start by memorising the hiragana and katakana charts.

Hanging these prints in a convenient area of your home or office will be a great way to keep motivated and prepare you to move on to the next steps of your Japanese journey!

NOTE TO AMERICAN CUSTOMERS:

As of July 1, 2020, international parcel shipping rates to America have increased by over 100%. This has come to a huge shock to many of us small business owners. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has been forced to increase their rates by the US government, and as a result, these increases have been passed on to Royal Mail customers here in the United Kingdom.

This price increase only affects parcel-sized packages, and these A3-size charts can only be shipped in this method. The rates for letter mail and large letter have not changed, so if you cannot justify the shipping cost of these and would still like to order something from my store, I would recommend looking at my pins, patches, and smaller A4 sized-prints. I apologise for the inconvenience, and hope that you understand the changes are beyond my control.

Sumo Wrestling A4 Riso Print
£15.00

Sumo is considered to be the national sport of Japan and has a rich history of ancient traditions and rituals. Wrestlers, called 力士 (rikishi), compete in six divisions as administered by the Japan Sumo Association. When a rikishi reaches the second highest division, 十両 (juryō), he is considered to be a professional and earns a salary along with significant privileges. The top division, 幕内 (makuuchi), consists of 42 wrestlers who compete in regular tournaments to win the coveted Emperor's Cup.

Sumo is long thought by many foreigners to be mysterious and difficult to understand, but the basic rules are simple—a wrestler loses a match when any part of his body other than the soles of his feet touches the ground, or if he steps outside the 土俵 (dohyō).

My riso print depicts iconic elements of the sumo sport. They include: 手形 (tegata, rikishi handprint signature), 焼き鳥 (yakitori, chicken skewers), お土産 (omiyage, souvenir), のぼり旗 (noborihata, standing flag), 力士 (rikishi, sumo wrestler), タイ (tai, sea bream), 座布団 (zabuton, floor cushion), ちゃんこ鍋 (chankonabe, hot pot stew), (taku, wooden clappers), 廻し (mawashi, wrestler belt), 天皇賜杯 (tennoushihai, Emperor's Cup), 浴衣 (yukata, wrestler robe), (yumi, bow), 呼出 (yobidashi, ring announcer), 塩かご (shiokago, salt basket), 行司 (gyōji, referee), (tsuna, yokozuna ceremony belt), 応援タオル (ouen-taoru, cheering towel), 軍配 (gunbai, signalling fan), 化粧廻し (keshō-mawashi, ceremonial apron), 懸賞金 (kenshōkin, prize money). Also featured are nods to rikishi 白鵬 (Hakuho), 高安(Takayasu), 霧島 (Kirishima), and 照ノ富士 (Terunofuji).

Printed in dark navy federal blue and orange inks.

Year of the Snake 2025 “Happy New Year” Greeting Card
£3.50

Ring in the New Year with this greeting card featuring a cute snake for 2025—the Year of the Snake, or “hebi” as they are known in Japanese. In Japanese mythology, the snake holds a deep symbolism rooted in both positive and negative associations. As the sixth sign in the 12-year zodiac cycle, it is often linked to qualities like wisdom, intuition, and transformation. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to possess a calm demeanor, sharp perception, and a natural inclination towards elegance and mystery.

Snakes in Japanese culture are also tied to spirituality and the supernatural. They are sometimes seen as protectors, representing rebirth and renewal because of their ability to shed their skin. However, they can also symbolize danger or misfortune, reflecting the dual nature of their role in myths and folklore.

Japanese Christmas Cake "Season's Greetings" Card
£3.50

If you’ve spent time in Japan during Christmas, you’ll know how popular strawberry shortcake is—a delightfully airy sponge topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. The tradition of eating strawberry shortcake on Christmas day isn’t rooted in religion at all, but in the story of Japan’s growth after World War II. Normally such ingredients were rare and considered a luxury, but as Japan’s economy took off after the war, more and more people could afford to make and buy this special dessert.

My rendition of the cake includes a daruma—why? Well, in Japanese a snowman is called a yuki-daruma, or “snow daruma”—I opted to make an actual daruma out of snow for a cute touch!

Rabbits, or usagi (兎), are a common motif in Japanese art and folklore stretching back thousands of years and even made an appearance in the first-known manga comic. Rabbits symbolise longevity and luck. Unlike the Western interpretation of the “Man in the Moon” face on the moon’s surface, the Japanese interpretation depicts a rabbit pounding rice to make mochi.

Celebrate the holidays with this greeting card featuring the Japanese red-crowned crane, also known as the tanchozuru (タンチョウヅル). These tall, graceful birds are synonymous with loyalty, fidelity, good luck, and are said to live for 1000 years. They are lifelong mates and are known for their expressive dancing rituals. There are two main populations of the Japanese crane in Japan. One group resident to Hokkaido does not migrate and can be seen at Kushiro Shitsugen National Park all year round.
