Rabbits, or usagi (兎), are a common motif in Japanese art and folklore stretching back thousands of years and even made an appearance in the first-known manga comic. Rabbits symbolise longevity and luck. Unlike the Western interpretation of the “Man in the Moon” face on the moon’s surface, the Japanese interpretation depicts a rabbit pounding rice to make mochi.
