Hinomaru 日の丸

Hinomaru (日の丸) is the most commonly used name for the flag of Japan, officially called “Nisshōki” (日章旗). It was adopted in 1870, but was made the national flag in 1999. It was the de facto flag throughout World War II but its use was restricted during the occupation of Japan. Today, the flag is most often seen on government buildings rather than homes and businesses. Controversies aside, it remains one of the most powerful symbols of the country.
