Usagi (兎) is the Japanese word for rabbit. They are seen as a sign of fertility in Japanese folklore and ancient tales explained that rabbits could become pregnant just by looking at the moon. Unlike the Western interpretation of the “Man in the Moon” face on the moon’s surface, the Japanese interpretation depicts a rabbit pounding rice to make mochi.
